The Staff Specialist contributes equitably to the general clinical workload of the Department of Cardiology and provides services related to their sub-speciality interest in order to deliver high quality specialist cardiology services for both inpatient and outpatient care.

The Department of Cardiology is a cooperative integrated Department incorporating the Coronary Care Unit, Cardiology Ward, Cardiac Catheter Suite and non-invasive testing unit and is the major tertiary teaching hospital in Tasmania and supports the delivery of state-wide services which may include tele-health.

The Staff Specialist - Cardiology position will:

  • Be a consultant role in general cardiology and electrophysiology.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care to public and private patients of the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) in cardiology.
  • Be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and to be actively involved in research
  • Undertake quality improvement activities.

Duties:

1. Patient Care:

• Provide a consultant service to inpatients and admit patients under their care incorporating principles of best practice.

• Conduct outpatient clinics in general cardiology and heart rhythm disorders, with supervision of nurse-led clinics.

• Ensures a system of continuous quality improvement that systematically evaluates, identifies opportunities for improvement and plans to implement strategies to meet customer needs

• Provide clinical leadership in electrophysiology and cardiac devices through service development and clinical redesign.

• Organise and lead a weekly meeting to discuss patients with indications for complex cardiac devices and catheter ablation

2. Teaching:

• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate specialist trainee teaching.

• Liaise with University of Tasmania, Department of Medicine and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in respect to the teaching of undergraduates and Registrars.

•  Assist with education, supervision and training of all health professionals.

3. Research:

• Maintain an active involvement in research.

4. Management:

• Responsible to Head of Department - Cardiology.

• Participation in committees or working groups relevant to specialty training, interests and expertise.

• Establishes and oversees activities to review resource utilisation and develop appropriate strategies plans and procedures for their efficient and effective use.

• Participate regularly in non-clinical work such as clinical meetings

4.  Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 pro rata per annum.
  • Relocation allowance.
  • On call allowance % of Base Salary.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment

Permanent full-time day work (with on-call), working up to 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible.

Essential Requirements

  • Holds specialist registration; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.  The following checks are to be conducted:
