Job description:

You’ll play a crucial role in preventing damaging pests and diseases from infiltrating Tasmania's borders, safeguarding our unique environment and agricultural industries. With a primary focus on reducing biosecurity risks, our mission aligns with propelling Tasmania towards a future where our natural resources, cultural values and environment are recognised and used sustainably for everyone’s prosperity.

We seek individuals who are good team players, adaptable, naturally inquisitive, highly attentive to detail and processes, and make considered decisions, with a keen ability to observe and identify the unusual. These skills will enable you to:

  • Undertake and report on biosecurity inspections, surveillance, control, and eradication activities.
  • Collect data and record keep during operational activities.
  • Investigate suspected non-compliance and undertake conduct of enforcement activities.
  • Assist in the delivery of biosecurity and animal welfare emergency responses.

Hours per fortnight

36.75 hours per fortnight (predominantly early morning hours – in accordance with an approved roster).

Pre-employment requirements

  • The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.  The following check is to be conducted:

    Conviction check in the following conviction areas:


    1. Crimes of violence
    2. Sex related offences
    3. Serious drug offences
    4. Crimes involving dishonesty
    5. Serious traffic offences
    6. Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019, or related legislation
  • Satisfactory security clearance as required by port authorities.

Essential requirements

  • Current unrestricted motor vehicle driver’s licence.

Desirable requirements

  • A Certificate III or Certificate IV qualification in plant health, animal health, land management or invasive species management biosecurity emergency management or government investigations or statutory compliance relevant to the nature of the work to be undertaken, as provided by either a university, a vocational education organisation or a registered and accredited training provider.
